Sustainable Development
The Land Council has a key responsibility to ensure that in any development that is considered within the archipelago, whether on land or in the sea country, has full consideration given to any impacts whether they be immediate or in the future. Sustainability is more than just a catch phrase. Our approach involves commitment, engagement, action plans and reporting to ensure that risk is minimised.
A key part of this approach is reflected in the active engagement with all mining activities to develop mine closure plans that will create a sustainable outcome for the future of the Groote archipelago.
A key first step with any development in the Groote archipelago is that it needs to demonstrate a real, tangible benefit to the Traditional Land Owners and to their communities, while not excessively impacting on the surrounding environment.
This benefit is then incorporated into our Strategic Plan (2012-2027) to provide economic, environmental, cultural, physical and other less tangible benefits into the future.
