Cane Toads
The Groote Archipelago is cane toad free, resulting in healthy populations of threatened and endangered species such as the northern quoll, which has been adversely affected by the introduction of cane toads across Northern Australia. All construction materials, equipment, machinery and vehicles must be inspected for cane toads when they arrive on Groote Eylandt.
Edna is a specialist trained odour detection dog used to detect cane toads that may enter Groote Eylandt via the barge landings. She plays a key role in helping keep the Groote Archipelago cane toad free.
The ALC request that you check your vehicles, trailers and personal belongings, especially those that have been outdoors before they travel to Groote Eylandt to ensure there are no cane toads hiding inside them. If you see a cane toad anywhere on the Groote Archipelago, please catch it and call (08) 8987 4425 immediately.
